Manufacturing Questions, Answered
Clear answers about drawings, process selection, materials, quality documentation and requesting a manufacturing review.
RFQ & drawings
What files can I send for an RFQ?
Send STEP, STP, IGES, IGS, X_T, SLDPRT, PDF, DWG, DXF, or a ZIP containing the controlled files. A 3D model plus a drawing is best when tolerances, datums, finishes, notes, or inspection requirements matter.
What information makes a quotation more useful?
Include quantity and annual demand, target material and condition, drawing revision, critical features, finish, tests, required records, delivery country, project stage, and any target timing.
Can you quote from a sample only?
A sample can support discussion, but a controlled drawing or agreed measurement specification is needed before production acceptance criteria can be defined.
Process selection
Can ZAODA compare die casting and CNC machining?
Yes. The review compares geometry, demand, design stability, material, tooling, setup, secondary operations, inspection, and design-change risk. A hybrid cast-plus-machine route may also be considered.
When does die casting make sense?
Die casting is typically considered when the design is sufficiently stable and repeat demand can justify production tooling. Compare the complete cost, including tooling, machining, finishing, inspection and maintenance.
When is five-axis machining useful?
It is useful when complex access or feature relationships benefit from fewer controlled setups. It is not automatically the best choice for geometry that can be produced more simply.
Tooling & samples
What affects die-casting tool cost and service life?
Part size, projected area, cavity count, slides and cores, die material, thermal management, inserts, alloy, maintenance and acceptance requirements affect tooling cost and service life. Estimates are based on the proposed tool design and operating conditions.
What happens after the first tooling trial?
T1 samples, dimensional results, casting and trimming observations, downstream machining or finish checks, and open actions are reviewed against the controlled revision. Corrections and further trials may be required before customer approval and production release.
Materials & finishes
Can I specify only “aluminum” or “stainless steel”?
That is enough for an early discussion but not production. Confirm the exact grade, temper or condition, governing standard, and certificate requirements before order release.
Are A380, ADC12, and 6061 interchangeable?
No. A380 and ADC12 are die-casting alloy references, while 6061 is a wrought alloy commonly machined from stock. Compare the governing specifications and required function rather than substituting names.
What should a surface-finish callout include?
Define the finish standard and type, thickness where relevant, color or gloss range, preparation, masking, cosmetic zones, contact or sealing surfaces, sample approval, and required tests.
Quality
How is inspection planned?
Critical characteristics, datum structure, method, equipment, sampling, reporting, and acceptance are agreed from the drawing and project risk before production.
Can you provide a CMM report or material certificate?
Request the exact document during quotation. Availability, format, characteristic list, frequency, traceability, and commercial impact must be agreed for the specific project.
How are tolerances confirmed for my part?
The review considers geometry, material, size, rigidity, workholding, process sequence, finish and inspection method. The drawing and accepted quotation establish the required tolerances.
Confidentiality
Are uploaded drawings publicly accessible?
No. RFQ files are stored outside the public web directory. Staff access requires authorization, downloads use temporary signed links, and access events are recorded.
Can I request an NDA?
Yes. State the NDA requirement before sharing restricted information so the appropriate review and signature process can be completed.
Production & delivery
What affects lead time?
Drawing readiness, material availability, tooling or fixture needs, programming, samples, secondary processing, inspection, customer approval, volume, packaging, and delivery route all contribute. Timing is confirmed after review.
Can prototypes move into production?
Yes, but the route may change. Production review covers design freeze, stock or tooling, fixtures, process controls, inspection, traceability, packaging, and the expected demand pattern.
How are parts protected for shipment?
Packaging is selected around material, finish, sharp or fragile features, cleanliness, corrosion risk, part-to-part contact, identification, quantity, and transport route.
Can ZAODA supply assembled and labeled components?
Where included in the approved project scope, manufactured and purchased parts can be assembled, checked, identified, and packaged to controlled drawings, BOM revisions, work instructions, acceptance tests, traceability, and handling requirements.
