Plan the Features Around Access & Datums

Start with the faces and features that must locate together. Tool access, workholding and the inspection approach determine how they can be machined in a controlled setup.

Plan the Features Around Access & Datums
Part featurePlanning decisionDrawing information
Pockets & internal cornersReview cutter reach, internal radii and chip access together. Deep, narrow features need particular attention to tool access.Identify functional pocket depths and radii, mating clearances and any geometry that may be adjusted.
Thin walls & platesReview support during cutting, clamping contact and distortion when the part is released.Identify critical wall sections, flatness requirements and the condition in which the part is inspected.
Holes & locating facesChoose the datum system and setup sequence around relationships between features.Show locating datums, hole positions, bore fits and the faces used during assembly.
Angled & multi-face featuresCompare accessible-face setups with multi-axis approaches. Additional axes are selected around access and feature relationships.Supply the complete model and drawing, with critical angular and positional relationships identified.
Manufacturing choices

Choose the Setup from the Part Geometry

Accessible faces
Review a three-axis approach where the cutter can reach the required features and the part can be supported.
Features around the part
Review indexing or simultaneous multi-axis access where repositioning, angular features or datum transfer affect the plan.
Cast components
Coordinate machining datums, locating stock and allowances with the casting route before fixing the machining sequence.

Milling Process & Drawing Notes

Process Applications

CNC milling creates prismatic and freeform features with rotating cutting tools. It is suited to housings, plates, brackets, manifolds, pockets, slots, angled faces, and components whose functional features must relate to a controlled datum system.

Part Design Priorities

Three-axis machining is efficient for accessible faces. Four- and five-axis approaches can reduce repositioning when geometry wraps around the part or when angular features must maintain close positional relationships.

Pre-Quotation Review

We review reach, cutter diameter, internal corner radii, deep pockets, thin walls, workholding surfaces, datum transfer, deburring, and probe access before selecting the setup plan.

Production and inspection

Inspection is matched to the drawing and may combine calibrated hand gauges, height or bore measurement, and CMM inspection. The method and reporting level are agreed before production.

Common questions

Machining Review Questions

What makes a milled feature expensive or difficult?

Deep narrow pockets, small internal radii, thin walls, long tool reach, repeated repositioning, inaccessible burrs, and broadly applied tight tolerances can add risk and setup time.

What should I send for this process review?

Send the 3D model, controlled drawing, order quantities and annual demand, material, critical features, finish, tests, required records, delivery country, and target timing.

How are machining tolerances assessed?

Feasibility depends on the feature geometry, material condition, workholding, process sequence, finish and measurement method. Identify critical tolerances on the drawing so they can be reviewed during quotation.
