A casting alloy, not a billet equivalent
A380 is an aluminum-silicon-copper die-casting alloy. It can suit repeat housings and brackets with integrated ribs, bosses and mounting features. Specify the exact material designation and governing standard rather than ordering generic aluminum. Wrought stock and a die casting with similar external dimensions have different manufacturing histories.
Properties depend on the part and test basis
Published typical properties help screen candidates. They are not automatic acceptance limits for every wall, boss or separately cast test bar. State the required property, specimen location, test method and supplied condition when those values control the design. A finished-part load test may be more relevant than a generic catalog tensile value.
Review the downstream route
Coating, machining and leak testing can determine whether the chosen alloy works in the application. Identify stock-removal zones before tool design, keep thick intersections under review and establish where appearance matters. If an alternate grade is proposed, compare all these requirements together rather than approving on material price alone.
Review checklist
| Review item | Define before release | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Material identity | Grade, standard and edition | Traceable material evidence |
| Local performance | Loaded boss or machined interface | Specified part or specimen test |
| Finish compatibility | Coating type and appearance zone | Production-intent sample |
Worked review example
For an electronic enclosure, approve the coated visible surface and the uncoated grounding pads together. A change of alloy may affect both even if the CAD model is unchanged.
Apply the review to your drawing
Identify the affected features on the current drawing and attach the material, finish and operating requirements that control them. Agree the proposed route and acceptance evidence before releasing a change. Send the controlled files for a project review.
