Select around the assembly
Zamak 3 is a zinc-aluminum die-casting alloy used for detailed hardware and small housings. Review the part mass, service temperature, fastening method and exposure alongside the drawing. Zinc and aluminum are different material choices; a part that is geometrically castable may still be unsuitable for a given temperature or loading condition.
Treat tight fits and appearance separately
Datum relationships and local dimensions should follow how the part locates in the assembly. Draft, the parting witness and ejector locations need acceptable zones. For visible hardware, define the surface preparation and coating system, including rack contacts and protected fits, before the die is finalized.
Approve the exact grade
Use the governing material specification and batch evidence. Avoid substituting Zamak 5 or another zinc grade without checking ductility, finishing and the functional test. Typical alloy data are useful for screening; the finished component still needs a drawing and inspection basis.
Review checklist
| Review item | Define before release | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Service condition | Load, temperature and environment | Application requirement |
| Functional fit | Datums and post-finish size | Dimension report or assembly gauge |
| Appearance | Visible zones and plating system | Approved sample |
Worked review example
For a furniture connector, inspect the final coated mating size rather than accepting only the raw casting dimension. Masking or a changed coating build may be needed.
Apply the review to your drawing
Identify the affected features on the current drawing and attach the material, finish and operating requirements that control them. Agree the proposed route and acceptance evidence before releasing a change. Send the controlled files for a project review.
