Select the Grade with the Service Environment

Corrosion exposure, material condition, machining and final surface requirements belong in the same review. The stainless family name alone does not define the delivered part.

Define the Surface as Carefully as the Grade

Exposure & assembly
Describe the media, temperature and mating or welded assembly so the specified grade can be reviewed in context.
Passivation & texture
Identify passivation requirements, surface texture and the surfaces that must retain their fit after processing.
Cleanliness & records
Specify any free-iron or cleanliness checks, acceptance criteria and material documentation required for the project.

Stainless Steel Selection Notes

Selection context

Stainless steel may be selected for corrosion resistance, strength, temperature performance or appearance. Required cleanliness is defined through processing and inspection. The grade and condition influence cutting forces, work hardening, distortion, finish response, and corrosion performance.

Common options

303 may be chosen for machinability where its composition and corrosion performance are acceptable. 304 and 316 are widely specified austenitic grades; 17-4PH offers a precipitation-hardening route with properties tied to heat-treatment condition.

RFQ Requirements

Confirm the governing material standard, condition, passivation requirement, surface texture, weld or assembly environment, restricted substances, certificates, and whether free-iron or cleanliness testing is required.

Common questions

Material Selection Questions

What should I define beyond “stainless steel”?

Specify the grade, condition, governing standard, corrosion environment, passivation, surface texture, certificate needs, and any cleanliness or free-iron test.

Who approves the final material specification?

The customer approves the grade, material condition, governing specification, required material records and permitted substitutions before production release.

Can finishing change the material decision?

Yes. Review coating compatibility, appearance, thickness, masking, heat exposure and electrical or corrosion requirements alongside the base material.
