Titanium Selection Notes

Selection context

Titanium may be selected for its strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance or temperature performance, subject to grade and service conditions. Material cost, limited heat dissipation during cutting, tool engagement and part rigidity require careful process planning.

Common options

Grade 2 commercially pure titanium and Grade 5 / Ti-6Al-4V serve different property requirements. The drawing must identify grade, condition, governing specification, grain-flow or stock-form needs, and any industry-specific controls.

RFQ Requirements

Review tool access, thin walls, heat input, coolant strategy, contamination control, burrs, surface integrity, galling risk, traceability, and whether special inspection or cleaning records are required.

Common questions

Material Selection Questions

What information is important for titanium machining?

Confirm grade and condition, traceability, critical geometry, surface condition, contamination restrictions, burr requirements, quantity, and any special cleaning or packaging.

Who approves the final material specification?

The customer approves the grade, material condition, governing specification, required material records and permitted substitutions before production release.

Can finishing change the material decision?

Yes. Review coating compatibility, appearance, thickness, masking, heat exposure and electrical or corrosion requirements alongside the base material.
